Product description

The Podocarpus, or Buddhist Pine, brings the look of a miniature evergreen tree indoors: dense whorls of long, narrow, deep-green needle-like leaves on neat woody stems, growing in a tidy upright, shrubby form. Slow-growing and long-lived, it holds its shape beautifully, takes pruning well, and is a favourite starting point for anyone curious about bonsai. Hardy, forgiving, and genuinely different from the usual broadleaf houseplants — a refined green statement for a desk, shelf, or entryway.

Plant Details

  • Botanical Name: Podocarpus macrophyllus
  • Common Names: Podocarpus, Buddhist Pine, Japanese Yew, Fern Pine
  • Family: Podocarpaceae
  • Colour: Deep glossy green, narrow strap-like leaves
  • Plant Characteristics: Upright, Evergreen, Woody, Slow-growing, Bonsai-suitable
  • Plant Height at Dispatch: 20–35 cm (including pot)
  • Suitable Space: Living Room, Study, Shelf, Entryway, Balcony, Bonsai Display

Why You Will Love It

    • A miniature evergreen look: dense, needle-like foliage gives the elegance of a conifer in a compact, indoor-friendly plant — rare among houseplants.

    • Perfect bonsai starter: slow-growing, woody, and responds well to pruning and shaping — an ideal first plant for bonsai or topiary.

    • Hardy and forgiving: tolerant of light variation and irregular watering, and one of the more transit-resilient plants we ship.

    • Neat, upright form: stays tidy and columnar without sprawling — clean lines for a desk, shelf, or entryway.

    • A meaningful gift: the Buddhist Pine carries associations of longevity and good fortune, making it a thoughtful housewarming or festive gift.

    • Flexible placement: happy in bright indirect light indoors, and can take gentle morning sun on a balcony.

    Inside The Box

    • Podocarpus (Live Plant)
    • Selected Pot
    • Pre-moistened growing medium

    Please Note

The plant you receive may slightly vary from the image shown due to natural growth patterns — this is normal. The pot shown is the pot you receive.

Podocarpus is slow-growing; it holds its form for a long time but will not put out fast new growth like foliage houseplants. This is characteristic of the plant, not a defect.

    How To Care

    • Light: Bright, indirect light indoors is ideal; it also tolerates a few hours of gentle direct sun (morning) and can go on a shaded-to-part-sun balcony. Too little light causes sparse, leggy growth.

    • Water: Summer (March–June) every 5–7 days, letting the top 2–3 cm of soil dry between waterings; monsoon (July–September) every 10–12 days, checking drainage carefully — it dislikes soggy roots; winter (October–February) every 12–15 days. Yellowing or dropping older needles = usually overwatering or poor drainage.

    • Soil: Well-draining potting mix (coco peat + compost + coarse sand/perlite). Good drainage matters more for Podocarpus than for the broadleaf plants.

    • Feeding: Balanced liquid fertiliser once a month, February–September. Skip October–January.

    • Pruning & shaping: Trims and shapes readily — pinch or prune the tips to keep it dense or to train a bonsai/topiary form. Best pruned in the growing season.

    • Repotting: Every 1–2 years. Being slow-growing, it tolerates a snug pot well, which suits bonsai training.
