Leek Plant Growing Season In India
Leeks are a mild cool season plant that grows well even in the spring season. This plant cannot tolerate excessive heat; the best season for sowing the leeks seeds is the winter season (October-February).
How To Grow Leeks From Seeds
Leeks grow fast in cool weather and are generally transplanted rather than directly sown in any pots/grow bags. The ideal soil temperature for leek seeds germination should be 15 to 20°C.
Leek Seeds Sowing Method
- Start sowing leek seeds in seedling trays or small pots. Fill the seedling tray/pot with growing medium (potting mix) and spread the leek seeds on it, then cover the seeds with a light layer of soil.
- Give light water and place the seed pot on a window, terrace, balcony, or another suitable place, where the pot can get 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight.
- It may take 7 to 14 days for leek seeds to germinate.
- When leek plants reach 15 cm tall, you can transplant them into another larger pot or grow bag, about 10-15 cm apart.
How To Fertilize Leek Plants at Home
Apply a mixture of cow dung manure, bone meal, neem cake, mustard cake, potash, etc. as organic fertilizer during the growing season or plant growth stage produce good leek.
Leeks Plant Care Tips
Water – Give 2-2.5 cm of water per week to leek plants and keep the soil moist.
Soil – Dry, fertile, and well-drained soil will help leeks grow rapidly.
Sunlight – Leeks require 6-8 hours of full light but also tolerate partial shade
Temperature – Temperatures 15 to 25°C are best for planting leek vegetables at home. Temperature higher than 25°C will slow the growth of leeks.
Common pests and diseases – Many insects such as onion thrips, maggots, allium leaf miners, and leek moths are commonly seen in leeks. These insects not only lay eggs on leek plants but also feed on the roots and leaves of leek onions. To prevent leaks from such insects, keep spraying neem oil on your plants regularly.
Leeks Harvest Time And Method
- Leeks are ready for harvesting in 90 to 120 days from transplanting.
- Cut the leeks when the stalks are about 2.5-4 cm in diameter.
- The roots of the leek are very wide, so at the time of harvesting, with the help of a small hand trowel or spading fork, take the leeks out of the soil a little and then cut them.
