Foot Kachri Growing Season In India

You can grow foot kachri vegetables in the summer season (February to June) because it is a hot weather plant but kachri also grows well in the monsoon/rainy season (July to mid-September). The foot kachri plant grows quickly in a hot climate and we can expect a good result in this season.

How To Grow Foot Kachri At Home

Foot kachri seeds can be sown directly into any pots/grow bags or started in a seedling tray and then transplanted once the seeds have germinated. But most gardeners suggest sowing seeds directly in containers. Select a pot or grow bag 30-60 cm wide and deep with well drainage holes. The foot kachri is a summer-growing vegetable and cannot tolerate cold weather so make sure not to sow the kachri seeds at 10°C or lower temperature. The best soil temperature for sowing cucumber seeds is 18-30°C.

Foot Kachri Seeds Sowing Method

Sow 1-2 foot kachri seeds directly into any pots or grow bags about 1 cm deep in well-composted soil; water the kachri pots with a watering can. The kachri seeds will germinate in about 6-10 days. Place the container in a sunny spot as foot kachri needs full sunlight for the best growth.

Best Fertilizer For Foot Kachri Plants

  •         Use slow-release fertilizer such as vermicompost, cow manure, or neem cake in the soil when you plant kachri.
  •         You can apply liquid fertilizer directly to the soil around the plant stem every 2 weeks.

Foot Kachri Plant Care Tips

Sunlight – Kachri plants prefer 6-8 hours of full sunlight.
Water – Give 2-2.5 cm of water per week and keep the soil consistently moist. Inadequate or inconsistent moisture will be the reason for the poor taste of kachri fruits.
Soil – Use fertile, loamy, and well-drained soil for growing foot kachri plants and soil should be neutral or slightly alkaline with a pH of 7.0.
Temperature – The Kachri plant grows best at temperatures between 21-32°C.
Common pests and diseases– Pests that attack the kachri fruit are whiteflies and cucumber beetles. Powdery mildew, root rot, and bacterial wilt are common diseases in kachri plants. If you are facing this problem use the organic pesticide Neem oil.

Foot Kachri Flower And Pollination

Within 1 month of planting, kachri starts flowering. As kachri is self-pollinated (which means they produce flowers that contain both male and female parts) they are not pollinated themselves. Foot kachri are depended on pollinators for pollination and bees are the main pollinators for them. Bees carry pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers and it allows the female flowers to produce fruit.

 Foot Kachri Harvest Time

  •         Foot kachri will be ready to harvest within 45-50 days from planting.
  •         Harvest the kachri when fruits are green and seeds are soft.
  •         Harvest regularly, when kachri is about 2.5-10 cm long.
  •         Don’t leave any kachri fruit on the vine for too long.

FAQ

Why are my kachri seeds not germinating?

Foot kachri seeds will not germinate because of improper growing conditions like not getting enough sunlight, sowing seeds too deep in the soil, overwatering, or under watering.

Why is my kachri plant getting wilting?

Overwatering is the main reason behind wilting; so avoid overwatering and keep the soil moist.

Where is the best place to plant foot kachri?

Balcony and terrace are the best options to plant kachri fruit because it needs full light.

Does the kachri plant need support?

Kachri is a vine plant so it needs support like pipe, bamboo, rope, creeper net, or wires because vine kachri produces more fruit and they require more space to grow.

Why is my foot kachri plant flowering but not producing fruits?

The kachri plant does not produce fruit due to the lack of pollination; the female flowers rely on bees (or humans) to transfer pollen from the male flowers.

How long does foot kachri take to grow?

Generally, kachri takes 45-50 days to harvest from planting but it mainly depends on the variety and growing conditions.
