Green Amaranth Growing Season In India

Amaranth or Chaulai saag can grow in any season throughout the year but it grows quickly from the summer season (February-April) the rainy Season June-July. Green amaranth love warm weather and grow very fast in hot climates. Green amaranth (Chaulai) thrives in warm temperatures between (20°C to 35°C) and can tolerate slightly higher or lower temperatures.

How To Grow Green Amaranth

Green amaranth seeds should be sown directly rather than transplanted. Green amaranth grows very fast in a warm climate and the best germination temperature is 18 to 27℃.

Green Amaranth Seeds Sowing Method

Select a pot/grow bag and fill it with potting soil mix. Spread the green amaranth seeds on it, then cover a thin layer of soil above the seeds. Give light water through a water sprayer and keep the soil moist. Keep the pot in a shaded area because green amaranth seed does not need light to germinate. It will germinate within 6-10 days.

How To Fertilize Green Amaranth

Use nitrogen-rich liquid fertilizer after seed germination but excessive nitrogen can cause the plants to become leggy and less suitable for harvesting.

Green Amaranth Plant Care Tips

Water – Green amaranth needs average water, give 1-inch water per week but the soil should be moist, not soggy.
Soil – Use loamy soil, nutrient-rich, and drainage soil for better growth of green amaranth plants.
Sunlight – Green amaranth can tolerate full sun as well as partial light, giving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight for better growth.
Temperature – Amaranth grows best in temperatures between 21-30℃ but it can tolerate temperatures up to 40°C.
Common pests and disease – The green amaranth plant is damaged by some foliar insects like leaf miners, leaf rollers, cutworms, aphids, flea beetles, and mites. To control these pests use organic pesticide neem oil in green amaranth plants.

The germination rate of quite a few seeds is poor. Okra, some summer flowers have not sprouted fully - some not at all and others 50% at best. While some last year’s leftover seeds of similar kind planted at same time have done much better.
